"A Guide to Academies"

cademy Schools are in the vanguard of innovative initiatives designed to deliver quality secondary education. There is already talk of the model being used to transform primary education.

To date, while much has been written around the politics of Academy Schools, little exists of a practical nature to instruct those involved from the private and public sectors in what is involved in establishing and operating an Academy School. What constitutes best practice?

TPP Law, whose trademark quality for legal innovation in partnership projects has made them legal adviser of choice on a wide range of education projects, has now produced the first practical book – “A Guide to Academies” – to help local authorities, private investors and school operators negotiate the setting up and running of an academy school.

This is vital homework reading for Academy sponsors, local authorities, project managers, school leaders, school staff and anyone with an interest in the academies programme.

The Guide details how Academies fit into both the Building Schools for the Future programme and the PfS National Framework, explaining the differences between the two approaches to delivery. It details the processes involved in setting up an Academy, and the constitution and governance arrangements for Academy Trusts.

The Guide covers the issues involved with setting up the Academy Trust explaining the relevant documents for set-up and the procurement of new buildings for the Academy. Governance points are explored, including the implications of an academy’s charitable status.

Information on each of the main contractual documents is featured, including:

The Funding Agreement
The Deed of Gift
The Development Agreement
Design and Build Contract
Property Leases
Staff Transfer Agreement
